Development
Our members are of the utmost importance to us in Scouting. Right now we offer seven core programs to the province. They include: Beavers (ages 5-7), Cubs (ages 8-10), Scouts (ages 11-14), Ventures (ages 14-17), Rovers (ages 18-26), Scoutsabout (ages 5-10), and Extreme Adventure (ages (14-17). All of our programs are co-ed; the programs are centred on education, but most of all, fun for all those who are involved.
Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest registration per capita for Beavers across Canada. The Scoutsabout and Extreme Adventure programs are fairly new programs offered by Scouts Canada and although they have not yet started in the province, we are hopeful that they will begin in the near future. Plans are already being made for the Extreme Adventure program this summer. Right now, we are hoping to have an Extreme hike with some youth members from Ontario. The hike will be out to the Spout, located on the scenic eastcoast trail. As well, this summer we are hoping to have our first ever Scoutsabout day camp - the camp will involve all of the aspects of Scouting without the uniform. With these new initiatives, we hope that our membership will grow and, but most of all, it is our desire to appeal to a new group of youth, which have not been attracted, to Scouting before.
We also have two Membership Development workers for the province. Their jobs are to travel around to the different communities and start new groups or help groups that are struggling with their numbers. They suggest ideas or incentives for attracting more members - such as bring a buddy night, or activities that involve the kids and their parents.
Finally Membership can be improved upon; most groups in the province have room for a few more youth and leaders, so if you would like to become involved please feel free to contact us.
