A fee-based research service is available upon request. Photocopying and scanning is done on-site. Processing of the administrative records will be finished in the summer of 2001. Access to the remaining records will be restricted until processing is completed, and access to certain contemporary financial records and registration records is at the discretion of scouts administration located in the building.

Background

The Scouting Movement was started in England in 1907. Scouting began in Newfoundland shortly thereafter. The Scouts Canada Provincial Council of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives was formed in 1997 with the appointment of an archivist, an archives committee and the setting up of a volunteer support group. Its mandate is to:

  • Collect and preserve archival material pertaining to the scouting movement in Newfoundland.
  • Provide appropriate conditions for the storage, protection and preservation of archival materials.
  • Process these materials according to the accepted archival standards of appraisal, selection, arrangement, and description.
  • Make the documents accessible to researchers through a commitment to regular and competent service.
  • Increase public awareness and promote utilization of the Archive as a community resource.

The archives committee is also responsible for overseeing a library of scouts-related publications and a collection of artifacts.

Archival Holdings

The archives contains provincial council records and some material from the various scouting regions within the province. It includes textual documents, graphic and cartographic material, architectural and technical drawings, moving images and sound recordings. The provincial council administrative records constitute a significant proportion of the archival material. These records include correspondence, registrations, camping events, honours and awards, financial records, programme records, and training material. In addition the archives contains a collection of over 5,000 photographs which document many scouting events and "scouters" from the Newfoundland movement's beginning to the present.
